History of Marble & Stone Inlaid Art Work
Marble inlay work is one of the most beautiful forms of art made from marble. The Taj Mahal and other Mughal monuments feature the same type of ornamentation. It is a well-guarded traditional art with only a few expert practitioners remaining today. The delicate process involves manually cutting and engraving marble shapes. First, a predefined pattern, such as a floral or geometric design, is engraved on the marble slab. Small pieces of marble in various shades are delicately cut to fit into these grooves precisely. The little pieces are then slipped into the grooves. Apart from marble, a variety of other materials can be used.
Inlay work on delicate precious stones began in the workshops of Florence, Italy, around the end of the 16th century. It was known as Pietra Dura. (Pietra = stone; Dura = hard) The Italians had created a classic artistic form and completely controlled it. From 1630 onwards, Pietra Dura appeared on moveable, small objects as decorative panels with bird and flower motifs, suitable for cabinet fronts, dining tables, and coffee tables. Some of these soon reached the Mughals in the form of marble stone inlay work (PACHEKARI) in India.
Among all Mughal Emperors, Shah Jahan was the greatest patron of Indian architecture. For him, no money or time was too much to create permanent architectural beauty that would be remembered forever. In his buildings, one feels most compelled to draw a connection between Mughal art and Pietra Dura. The Taj Mahal, the Emperor and His Wife's Cenotaphs, the Main Floor, and the surrounding marble railings all have striking similarities to the Pietra Dura form.
